The program is entitled "Art and the Law," and will focus on the use of American courts in dealing with stolen art. Panelists include a representative from the New York Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Meeting Preparation:

The November 9 meeting will focus on two Supreme Court decisions, Korematsu v. United States, 323 U.S. 214 (1944), and Hamdi v. Rumsfeld, 124 S. Ct. 2633 (2004), and the extent to which the government's war powers justify the curtailment of individual rights. Special attention will be paid to issues concerning the lawfulness of racial profiling in times of war or conflict.

In order for members to gain the most from the presentation, it would be helpful to read both Korematsu (which addressed a World War II executive order forbidding individuals of Japanese descent from being present in certain regions of the country and which is generally associated with the internment of Japanese Americans during the war) and Hamdi (which involved an American citizen's challenge to his detention as an enemy combatant in Afghanistan).
