Digital Applications

The Program emphasizes the use by faculty and students of computer technology and digital communication. Students and faculty have full access to the Law School local area network, both through the Law School’s extensive computer system and from their office or home computers.

Faculty and students are encouraged to communicate electronically in reference to the subject matter of their courses. Students are given full access to LEXIS and WESTLAW at no cost. The required course, Tax Research and Writing, emphasizes tax research in electronic media including CD ROM and the Internet. Several elective courses (Computer Applications in Tax Law, Electronic Commerce, Digital Security for Tax Practitioners and Introduction to Digital Law) provide substantive instruction in digital law and its application.

Instructors in a number of substantive courses in the Program employ the BlackBoard Classroom, an electronic course management system, which they use to provide syllabi, class assignments, course materials and documents, synchronous and asynchronous communications, and for current developments. In addition, the digital audio recordings of class sessions are available to students in the BlackBoard Classrooms. All students are expected to become familiar with the use of that system and other basic computer-based resources. To that end, all students are required to attend the Computer Utilization Seminar when they first enter the program. The seminar is scheduled shortly after the beginning of each semester.
