Job Descriptions

Editor-in-Chief

The Editor-in-Chief (EIC) is ultimately responsible for the publication of the Law Review and for the conduct of all Law Review related activities. He or she serves as the chief administrator of the Law Review and has jurisdiction over all such functions. The EIC is responsible for doing a technical edit on all articles to be published. The EIC has the final authority to decide Bluebook questions, stylistic questions and disputes regarding content of all pieces for publication. Additionally, the EIC has the final decision on the publishablility of all submitted materials as well as the format and the content of each issue. The EIC will cast the deciding vote in the event that the Managing Editors of Students Works are deadlocked on whether a Staff Member's work is creditworthy. The EIC will chair all meetings and committees, with the exception of the Open Writing Competition Committee, on which he or she will only serve as a member. The EIC is responsible for the administration of the Law Review, including, but not limited to, reading and answering correspondence, presiding over disciplinary and Credit Committee proceedings, conducting meetings, serving as a liaison between students and faculty and presiding over Law Review functions. The EIC is also responsible for reviewing and handling book proofs.

Executive Editor

The Executive Editor (EE) will work closely with the EIC. He or she will be responsible for approximately one-half of the technical edits to be performed on all pieces to be published. The EE will assist with the administration of student work portion of the Law Review and will be responsible for performing the managing edit on the Giannella Lecture. Additionally, the EE is responsible for working closely the Managing Editor of Production to review and handle page proofs. The EE will also serve as the Chairperson of the Open Writing Competition, with his or her responsibilities including organizing and supervising the Open Writing Competition, chairing the Open Writing Competition Committee, working closely with the Summer Writing Competition Editor and reviewing all participant submissions. The EE is ultimately responsible for the training and instruction of all Law Review staff members concerning their duties and responsibilities. Although the EE may delegate the responsibility of training staff members to the Managing Editors of Outside Articles and Managing Editors of Student Works, he or she is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the Law Review staff is properly trained. The EE is available to answer any questions and give advice to staff members regarding all facets of the Law Review.

Managing Editor of Production

The Managing Editor of Production (MEP) is responsible for assigning and supervising the proofreading and sourcechecking assignments performed by staff members. The MEP also works in conjunction with the EE in the training and instruction of new staff members concerning all poolwork.

Managing Editors of Student Works

The Managing Editor of Student Works (MESWs) are responsible for the coordination and editorial and technical accuracy of all student work. These duties include:

  • Supervision of the associate editors;
  • Preparation of notes and suggestions for all staff members performing on sourcechecks on student work;
  • Collective decision making to determine which student pieces will be published;
  • Substantive edits of all student works;
  • Review of all student work not selected for publication with the author, as requested;
  • Review of all student requests to deviate from the standard writing requirement; and
  • Completion of written performance evaluations for any staff members who perform poolwork under their supervision.

The MESWs also serve on the Credit Committee, along with the EIC and EE, to review the work on all Law Review members and to make a collective determination on credit certification.

Managing Editors of Outside Articles

The Managing Editors of Outside Articles (MEOAs) are responsible for selecting outside articles to be published in the Law Review. The editors are responsible for performing an initial edit and an in-depth, substantive edit on all outside articles to be published. The MEOAs will have the ultimate authority and responsibility to maintain correspondence with the outside authors. The MEOAs will also complete writing performance evaluations for any staff members who perform poolwork under their supervision. Additionally, the MEOAs are responsible for inputting any changes made to the outside articles by the authors and by the EIC or EE during the technical edit stage of publication.

Managing Editors of Symposium

The Symposium Editors are responsible for organizing the Law Review symposium and editing the symposium issue of the Law Review. Organizing the Law Review begins in late spring and continues through the fall. The organizational responsibilities of the Symposium Editors include selecting a symposium topic, contacting potential speakers, arranging for advertising and other public relation activities, communicating with alumni, conducting general mailings and maintaining correspondence with the symposium authors/speakers. The Symposium Editors are also responsible for performing managing edits on all nonstudent material appearing in the symposium issue. The Symposium Editors will also complete written performance evaluations for any staff members who perform poolwork under their supervision.

Writing Competition Editor

The Writing Competition Editor has responsibility for the Writing Competition and serves as an executive member of the Open Writing Competition Committee. The duties of the Writing Competition Editor include selecting a case that will be the subject of the Writing Competition, compiling writing competition packets (cases, statutes, articles, etc.) maintaining the confidentiality of all participants' identities and participating in the final selection process.

Research& Business Editor

The prime function of the Research & Business Editor is to coordinate the research for all student work. These research responsibilities include:

  1. Note Topic Selection: Over the summer, the Research & Business Editor is responsible for selecting topics, putting together selection materials and organizing selection meetings. This responsibility may include contacting professors regarding possible topics. In addition, the final number of topics, the final draft of the topic selection forms and the accuracy and timeliness of all citations is the ultimate responsibility of the Research & Business Editor.
  2. Note, Casebrief and Comment Seminars: In conjunction with the MESWs, the Research & Business Editor will hold a seminar for interested staff members. This will give the staff a strong foundation regarding how to approach their writing assignments.
  3. Comment Topic Selection: The Research & Business Editor is responsible for helping third year staff members select topics for Comments and advising on the feasibility of such topics. The Research & Business Editor will assist third year staff members to select their topic by providing them with avenues of research.
  4. Westlaw/Lexis Representative: The Research & Business Editor, in cooperation with the EIC, is responsible for all contact between the Law Review and the Westlaw and Lexis representatives. He or she is responsible for the continued operation of the research computers. In addition, the Research & Business Editor may organize advanced research seminars for the benefit of the Law Review.
  5. Casebrief Topic Selection: With the assistance of the MESWs, the Research & Business Editor supervises the Casebrief topic selection. The Research & Business Editor will also be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the business affairs of the Law Review. The Research & Business Editor will work closely with the Administrative Assistant, in completing these duties. These responsibilities include:
     
    • Keeping the subscription list up-to-date and billing all subscribers on an annual basis;
    • Maintaining the Law Review home page on the Internet, which includes ensuring that all published articles appear on the Web in a timely fashion and responding to e-mail addressed to the Law Review; and
    • Working with the administration to achieve a more efficient and effective Law Review from a business standpoint.

Managing Editor of Associate Editors

The MEAE provides direct oversight over the staff's writing and draft-editing process and assists the staff in writing their Notes, Casebriefs and Comments. The Managing Editor of Associate Editors has two primary responsibilities. First, the MEAE is responsible for overseeing the editing performed by the AEs and ensuring that they provide necessary and useful feedback. Second, the MEAE is responsible for editing the staff's Notes, Casebriefs and Comments if either their AE fails to do an adequate job or at the request of the staff writer. Additionally, the MEAE is responsible for such other duties as the EIC and/or EE may require of the position, particularly regarding to the staff's writing efforts.

Associate Editors

The Associate Editors (AEs) have primary responsibility for the supervision of all student writing and research. Their duties include the evaluation of staff member performance on writing requirements, enforcement of writing deadlines and editing and general assistance with the successful completion of all student writing. The AEs report directly to, and work closely with, the MESWs. Additionally, the AEs will serve as members of the Writing Competition Committee, which requires them to review some portions of the Writing Competition participant submissions. The AEs will complete written performance evaluations of staff members' progress in meeting the writing requirement. In the discretion of the EIC and EE, AEs can choose either to take on increased editing/poolwork responsibilities or write a Comment.
