Clinics/Externships Registration Process
As explained below, students will have three opportunities to register for clinical courses:
- Clinic/Externship Early Admission Period: April 4 - April 12, 2005
- Regular Course Request Period: April thru June, 2005
- Fall Semester Add/Drop Period
Students who apply during the Clinic/Externship Early Admission Period have the greatest likelihood of getting a clinic position and will be most able to create their course schedule around their clinic/externship responsibilities.
Because of the unique nature of clinical courses and the need to have sufficient students to handle all of the client matters, students who are enrolled in a clinic must commit to the course within a specified time frame by signing a letter of acceptance, which can be obtained in the Clinic Office, room 7, or can be mailed to the student at home along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the students to return promptly after signing.
Students may not drop a clinic course after the dates specified below, without permission from the faculty.
1. Early Admission Period
Registration
The early admission period is designed to help students schedule their other classes in light of their Clinic/Externship obligations. Early Admissions requests will be accepted for both the Fall
2005 and Spring 2006 semesters between April 4th and April 12th. During this period, students will use the on-line clinic registration form,
and not NOVASIS, to request and rank their preferences for clinics/externships.
clinic registration form. If more requests than spaces are available for a particular clinic/externship, a lottery will be run. Admission to the CARES Clinic is by written application. No lottery will be run for enrollment in the CARES Clinic. CARES Clinic application forms can be picked up
from Pat Brown in the Clinic Office, Room 7. Completed CARES application forms must be returned by April
12th to Pat Brown in the Clinic Office, Room 7. With the exception of Spring semester Farmworker Clinic, Tax Clinic, and the CARES Clinic, preference for clinics will be given to rising 3Ls who have not previously taken a clinic. For the Spring semester of the Farmworker Clinic, preference for two (2) slots of Farmworker Clinic will be given to rising 2Ls. For the Spring semester of Tax Clinic, preference for two (2) slots of Tax Clinic shall be given to rising 2Ls who will have completed Introduction to Taxation by the end of the fall semester of the second year of law school. Preference for externships will be given to rising 3Ls who have not previously taken an externship. No student will be placed in more than one clinic or externship. No student will be on more than one clinic or externship wait list.
Notification
Students will be notified of their enrollment in a clinical/externship course on April
14th.
Student Commitment
Students who are enrolled in any of the clinics or externships and do not plan to participate must drop no later than
April 27th. Drops must be emailed to registrar@law.villanova.edu. All students who accept a clinical position must sign an Acceptance Agreement. Acceptance Agreement forms are located in the Clinic Office, Room 7. Please see
Pat Brown in Room 7 for a form.
2. Course Request Period
Registration
Students will have the opportunity to request Clinics/Externships for both the Fall
2005 and Spring 2006 semesters on a space-permitting basis during the course request period. During this period, students will use NOVASIS to request a clinic/externship; students must request their first choice, and
only their first choice, in NOVASIS as part of the course request process. If a student is requesting more than one clinic/externship, the student must rank his/her preferences using the on-line clinic request form. Preference for clinics will be given to rising 3Ls who have not previously taken a clinic. No student will be placed in more than one clinic or externship, or be on more than one clinic or externship wait list.
Notification
Students will know if they are registered for a clinic/externship they requested by checking on NOVASIS when schedules are posted after the lottery.
Student Commitment
Students who are enrolled in any of the clinics and do not plan to participate, must drop no later than
July 15th. Drops on or before July 15 must be done on Novasis. Your commitment to the clinic is an indication of the professional responsibility you will be entrusted with in your live client matters. Given the demands associated with certifying students for practice in respective clinics and the importance of advance notice needed to schedule appropriate client matters, drops will not be permitted later than July 15 barring extraordinary circumstances and without consent of the faculty supervisor of the particular clinic in which the student was enrolled.
3. Add/Drop Period
Registration
Externships
Once the course request period is over and add/drop begins, students can attempt to register through NOVASIS, for Fall and Spring Externships on a first come/first served basis. All registration must be done through NOVASIS, as the on-line form will no longer be used.
Clinics
Registration for clinics during add/drop cannot be done through NOVASIS and must be done through the on-line registration form. Given the demands associated with certifying students for practice in respective clinics and the importance of advance notice needed to schedule appropriate client matters, drops will not be permitted later than July 15 barring extraordinary circumstances and without consent of the faculty supervisor of the particular clinic in which the student was enrolled.
