Newsletter Overview September 13, 2003, will mark to the day the 50th Anniversary of the first day of classes for Villanova Law School. The Law School plans to celebrate this golden jubilee in grand fashion for the entire academic year 2003-2004. This is a truly remarkable opportunity to showcase Villanova University School of Law and its profound impact, past, present and future, on the profession and on the community at large. We started our planning this year with the formation of a 50th Anniversary Steering Committee composed of alumni, students, faculty and staff members (listed below). The logo you see featured on this page has been adopted by the Steering Committee as the official 50th Anniversary logo, and will appear prominently on all publications, stationery, and banners during the academic year 2003-2004. The milestone celebration year will be marked by two keystone events: a grand Academic Convocation on Saturday, September 13, 2003, and a Gala Celebration on Saturday, March 20, 2004. The Convocation The Academic Convocation on Saturday, September 13, 2003 will feature a speaker of national prominence, and will take place in Verizon Hall, the 2,500 seat concert hall in the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the spectacular new addition to the Avenue of the Arts in Center City Philadelphia. A cocktail party will follow the Convocation. Both events are free and open to all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the Law School. Mark your calendars now! This year, the two distinguished Villanova Law Alumni Association Awards (the Donald W. Dowd Alumni Association Award for Public Service and the Gerald Abraham Alumni Association Award for Service) will be presented at the Academic Convocation. All members of the Villanova Law School Community are welcome to submit nominations recognizing graduates for service to their alma mater and the community. Please click here for more information regarding the awards and nomination process. All nominations must be received by April 1, 2003. Earlier that day, we will host an Academic Symposium at the Law School, which will showcase our Law School faculty members in a program themed “The Next 50 Years in the Law.” The symposium will feature multiple panels with topics such as “The Future of Criminal Law,” “The Future of Law and Social Justice,” “The Future of Privacy Law,” “The Future of Law and Technology” to name just a few. The Gala Celebration The Gala Celebration on Saturday, March 20, 2004 will take place downtown, at a venue to be decided shortly. Billed as a black-tie dinner (with dancing!), the Gala promises to be a memorable and fun-filled evening. The Rest of the Year All other regularly scheduled Law School events during the academic year 2003-2004 (such as Red Mass, the Law Review Symposium, Giannella Lecture) will incorporate the 50th Anniversary theme, which focuses on looking back and looking forward. The Steering Committee is working hard to plan a truly spectacular celebratory year for us all to remember! We are currently designing a 50th Anniversary web site that will contain event updates and schedules, as well as fun facts, trivia, and pictures of the Law School over the past 50 years. We hope everyone will be a part of the celebration and welcome your input! If you have any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions please email 50@law.villanova.edu, and the Steering Committee will be happy to consider your suggestions! If you would like to speak to someone directly about the 50th Anniversary Celebration or any of the specific events, please contact Vanessa Rae Silva, Director of Giving Programs, at 610-519-7437. 50th Anniversary Steering Committee Doris Brogan, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Ex-Officio Representatives Jim King, Class of 1993; President, Alumni Association |
